Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Lacey will remain closed through Friday as a precaution, officials said on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Popcorn Park was closed Monday and will remain closed “to fully sanitize and manage the situation for future exposure,” the zoo said in a statement.

A group of birds mostly consisting of poultry and waterfowl have been identified and selected by the USDA to be euthanized by the agency in hopes that the virus does not spread.

"None of our other resident birds are affected or suspected of any exposure due to various housing locations and situations," the zoo said.

The zoo said it is “working closely with the United States Department of Agriculture and the state Department of Agriculture,” to ensure none of its approximately 200 animals get sick.

If the other animals remain healthy, Popcorn Park will reopen at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, officials said.

Established in 1977, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused, or elderly — farm animals, birds, and wildlife (domestic and exotic).
